CALL GUIDE / CONNECTION

A better live video call begins with fewer unknowns.

Connection quality depends on the device, browser, network, permissions and the other participant. A short pre-call check is more useful than promising a fixed number of seconds.

WHO CAM / WHOCAM.LIVEAbout this guideChecklistPractical guide
1

Make the browser’s job easier

Close applications that are using the camera or microphone. Connect headphones before entering if the device tends to switch audio routes. The random video chat on mobile guide covers interruptions, data use and one-handed controls in more detail; in general, a stable Wi-Fi or strong cellular signal is more useful than a speed-test headline.

If the page has permission but no picture appears, confirm the right camera is selected and reload only after leaving the current flow cleanly. Repeatedly opening tabs can keep devices busy.

2

Light the face, simplify the background

If you want to know how to look better on video chat, start with a soft light in front of you instead of a bright window behind you. Raise the camera closer to eye level and keep it stable. These changes improve legibility without exposing more of the room.

A perfectly sharp image is not required for a worthwhile conversation. If bandwidth drops, reducing background activity and moving closer to the router may help more than changing filters.

3

Respond to the actual state

“Looking,” “connecting,” “permission denied,” and “call ended” describe different stages. WhoCam uses distinct copy because the next action differs: wait, allow access, retry a device, or return to matching.

If the product says a call has ended after returning from payment, do not pretend it can be restored. Start from a clean product state instead.

4

Recover cleanly on a phone

Mobile browsers can interrupt media when a call arrives, the screen locks, headphones reconnect, or the page moves into the background. Return to the tab and read the current state before pressing anything repeatedly.

If audio moved to the wrong device, leave the active call before changing several settings at once. One reversible change at a time makes it easier to tell whether the problem is permission, routing, hardware, or network.

5

Confirm local preview before evaluating the connection

The local preview answers whether the selected camera can provide an image to the page. If it is black, begin with permission, physical shutter, device selection and other apps using the camera. Internet speed cannot fix a camera the browser is not receiving.

Check the frame at the same time: face visible, light in front, private details outside the edges. This is a functional preview, not a beauty test. Once the local image and microphone level are understandable, the later remote state becomes easier to diagnose.

6

Read microphone routing before blaming silence

Bluetooth headphones, wired headsets and mobile speaker routes can change the selected microphone when they connect. Choose the intended input before matching and speak at a normal level. A meter or preview response confirms local capture; it does not prove the remote participant can hear through a broken connection.

If routing changes during a call, avoid switching several settings at once. End or stabilise the current state, select one input and retry cleanly. Multiple WhoCam tabs and meeting apps can compete for the same hardware.

7

Distinguish looking, connecting and live media

Looking is a match request, not a live call. Connecting is the transition in which remote media may not yet be ready. Live means the product has established the conversation state. The interface should not display a face card or online number as proof that one of these states has already completed.

After pressing Start or Next, give the screen time to respond. Several quick taps do not tell you whether the first request succeeded, and a slow connection can leave you unsure which action is still running. Read the status before retrying; a waiting screen is not yet a conversation.

8

Treat frozen remote media differently from a black self-view

When local preview works but remote audio and video freeze, connection quality or the other endpoint becomes more likely than local permission. Pause competing downloads, move to a stable network and let the current state settle. Do not immediately revoke working camera access.

When only audio is missing, check mute and route before resetting video. When the entire page is unresponsive, use Stop or close the tab and verify media indicators. The smallest reversible diagnostic change produces better evidence than clearing all browser data.

9

Find the call controls before putting your phone down

Hold your phone as you expect to use it and locate Stop before starting. Keep the bottom of the screen clear of your grip or phone stand. Next moves you towards another conversation; Stop is the choice when you want to finish. Do not rely on remembering an icon from another chat app.

If a phone call interrupts you or you switch to another app, check the conversation status when you return. A familiar face left on screen can be an old frame, not proof that the connection is still live. If the call has ended, decide whether you want another match rather than assuming it resumed.

10

When you keep talking over each other

A delay can make two polite people interrupt each other repeatedly. Try shorter sentences and leave a little space after a question. Ask whether your sound is arriving late rather than assuming the other person is ignoring you. If the picture is moving but words arrive in bursts, focus on whether a simple exchange is understandable before attempting a longer conversation.

If the delay persists, end the call and check your connection before trying again. Do not keep repeating personal information because you are unsure it was heard, and do not change several device settings during an active exchange. A shorter clear conversation is more useful than struggling through a long one without knowing what reached the other side.

11

End the call at both interface and device level

Use Stop, wait for the product to acknowledge the end and confirm camera and microphone indicators switch off. Closing a visual overlay without ending media is not a complete exit. On mobile, also check whether the browser remains active in the background.

To meet somebody else, use Next and wait for the screen to acknowledge the change. To finish for now, use Stop and check that the call has ended. Locking your phone is not a substitute for ending a conversation; take the extra moment before putting the device away.

12

Record the state needed for useful support

For a device problem, note browser, operating system, camera or microphone selected and whether local preview worked. For a connection problem, note the named product state and whether audio, video or both failed. Do not send a participant’s face when the interface state is enough.

For a payment interruption, add account reference, order identifier and displayed result. These categories lead to different fixes. “The call failed” without the stage forces support to guess, while a short state-based report can be reproduced without collecting unnecessary personal material.

Before sending anything, remove passwords, full card details and unrelated participant media. Approximate time plus the precise state is usually more useful than a long story. The support request should make the technical path reproducible while exposing as little personal information as possible.

If the issue cannot be reproduced, label it intermittent rather than claiming that every live call follows the same failure pattern.

Checklist

Thirty seconds before a live call

  1. 1Close other camera or microphone apps.
  2. 2Check light, frame and audio route.
  3. 3Confirm the browser has the intended permissions.
  4. 4Know where Stop, Next and report controls are.
